Create a Seamless Metal Net Pattern With Photoshop

In today’s Photoshop tutorial I’ll walk you through the process of creating a seamless metal net pattern. We’ll be using shape layers and a couple layer styles to achieve the final results. Metal net patterns can be great for various parts of design, commonly used for backgrounds. Let’s begin!

Step 1: Create a New Document

Open Photoshop and go to File > New (or CTRL+N) to create a new document. We need to create a 132 pixels x 20 pixels document at 72 pixels/inch resolution. Color Mode: RGB 8 bit. Background Contents: Transparent.

Step 2: Create the Metal Background

First we need to fill the background so hit CTRL+Backspace or go to Edit > Fill > and Select Background color. Then we will apply a gradient to the layer to create the metal effect so right click the layer and go to Blending Options.. and use the following Gradient Overlay settings.

Blend Mode: Normal, Opacity: 100%, Gradient: Location 0% – Color #8f8f8f, Location 100% – Color #e3e3e3, Style:Refelected, Angle: 0

Step 3: Creating the Net

Now that we have our metal canvas we will begin to create the net. First lets hold CTRL and hit + to zoom in until about 600%. There is about 12 shape layers for both rows so let’s also create a new group and name it top. Then change your foreground color to #000000 and using the Ellipse Tool hold SHIFT and draw out an 8px by 8px circle. Move it 2px from the left and 1px from the top of our canvas.

Next we will right click the Ellipse layer and Duplicate Layer.. Move the copy 3px from the left of the previous Ellipse.

Create a Seamless Metal Net Pattern With Photoshop | Step 3b

Repeat the previous step of duplicating the layer and moving 3px from it’s previous position until you get to the end of our canvas. There should be 1px to the right of the last Ellipse which creates the repeating pattern of 3px space since the first Ellipse has 2px space to the left.

Next we will close the top group, then right click it and Duplicate Group.. Name it bottom then while holding SHIFT use the Move Tool to move the entire group 2px down from the bottom of the top group.

Create a Seamless Metal Net Pattern With Photoshop | Step 3d

With the Move Tool and bottom group still selected hit the left arrow on your keyboard 6 times to move the entire group 6px to the left. You should then have the bottom group starting with right half of a circle (4px).

Create a Seamless Metal Net Pattern With Photoshop | Step 3e

Now we need to finish the net pattern on the right side so first open the bottom group. Then we will right click the last Ellipse layer (Ellipse 1 copy 11) and Duplicate Layer.. Move it 3px from the left of the previous circle and now the bottom group should end with the left half of a circle.

Create a Seamless Metal Net Pattern With Photoshop | Step 3f

Now we can zoom back out so holding CTRL hit – until we are back to 100%. We will create a nice crisp bevel effect on the netting, so right click one of the Ellipse layers and go to Blending Options.. use Drop Shadow with these settings.

Blend Mode: Normal #f4f4f4, Opacity: 100%, Angle: 90, Distance: 1px, Spread: 0%, Size: 0px

Create a Seamless Metal Net Pattern With Photoshop | Step 3g

Last thing we to do is right click the Ellipse we just added Drop Shadow too and select Copy Layer Style. Then close both the top and bottom groups. While holding CTRL click both the groups to select them, then right click them and Paste Layer Style.

Step 4: Defining the Pattern and Using It

Now that we have created the metal net pattern we need to define it so go to Edit > Define Pattern.. give it a name such as Metal Net Pattern. It’s now ready to use through Blending Options.. Pattern Overlay or you can fill a layer/selection with the pattern by going to Edit > Fill > Pattern and choosing the Metal Net Pattern.
