From the Sands of Iwo Jima North Carolina native and World War II Leatherneck Bill Henderson tells a powerful and inspirational story about his experiences in combat during one of the most brutal battles of the South Pacific. iTouch Publishers is publishing and promoting this epic tale. It was February 19, 1945, when Bill Henderson and more than 70,000 of his fellow Marines made their way toward what is now known as Invasion Beach on Iwo Jima. They jumped off their boats with their weapons in hand, beginning a life-and-death struggle to gain a foothold on an island made up of thick, volcanic sand. With his fellow servicemembers fighting and dying by the hundreds, like many Marines, Bill realized that they couldn't see the enemy, but the enemy could see them. And although the Marines were above ground, the Japanese were under ground. The Marines rarely saw a Japanese soldier.
In his own words, Bill explains: Pearl Harbor was the catalyst for many of us who had volunteered for service. Within days of the attack on December 7, 1941, thousands upon thousands of young men had reported to recruiting centers nationwide, feeling a call to duty, honor, and country when such a phrase wasn’t yet a cliché. I remember that day - it was a Sunday morning, and I had risen early to eat breakfast and attend church at Wesley Memorial United Methodist. After church, I was just finishing lunch with some friends from High Point College in High Point, North Carolina where I was a senior. There was an announcement that the Japanese had attacked Pearl Harbor. The air exploded with talk after the initial stunned silence. Reports of the war in Europe suddenly telescoped into our own backyard. On December 8, we gathered in the fraternity house to listen to President Roosevelt address the nation. I was outraged as I listened to the President describe what had transpired on the day he referred to as a “day of infamy.” The room echoed with the committed voices of my fraternity brothers: “We have to join up!” and “We’ll show them Japs not to mess with Americans.” The following day we traveled to Raleigh, North Carolina, to volunteer in the Marine Corps. |
