I have a friend who doesn’t believe in God (yet) because to him, belief in God and dependence on Him represents incapability to be self-sustainable for life management. The ability to make sense out of life is a big part of existence and subscribing to an unseen power that claims absolute Truth is irritating to anyone who misunderstands the nature of God. This idea of God makes Him into a ruler whose assistance is tangent on our unwilling subservience based simply on our incompetence and who manipulates our desire for completion into a twisted form of control. This idea of God brings with it the bitter taste of hopelessness and reduces God to the image of a selfish man and reduces spirituality into rational system of merit and reward. This stems from a misunderstanding of the nature of God and a misconception of how God sees us.

It is true that God is a ruler and that obedience to His commands is a condition for satisfaction, but these are mere characteristics of the Kingdom and are not threatening rules when we understand the true nature of God’s desire. It is not that we should come to Him on legal terms. God is not waiting to condemn us for our broken ness. Not only does He understand our broken ness, but also He understands how it happens and the futility of our own understanding. Returning to God is very much like mending a relationship. Rather than passing judgment on our inability to go on without Him, God welcomes us to trust Him and allow Him enlighten us with His wisdom, with His understanding of everything.
